About This Class

Bryan Kest's "Deception" earns its name by luring students in with a deceptively leisurely floor-based opening — supine butterfly, spinal twists, bridge, shoulder stand, and plow — before revealing a demanding dynamic flow. The class progresses from passive floor work (wide-legged forward fold, seated hamstring stretches, reclined hip openers) into a challenging standing sequence featuring down dog with one-armed variations and hand-behind-back shoulder stretches, dolphin pose, crescent lunge, warrior poses, triangle, a signature "crunge" (core lunge), twisting side-angle variations, and crow-prep arm balances. Push-up (chin-to-floor) repetitions and prone locust-style back strengthening add upper-body and posterior-chain heat. Throughout, Bryan returns obsessively to deep, fluid breathing as the anchor for mindfulness and mind-quieting — framing the breath as the true goal of yoga. The class closes with reclined spinal twists, a double pigeon-style hip opener, and an extended savasana with instructions to let the breath become subtle and the mind still. Suitable for practitioners who want a full-body mobility and strength challenge wrapped in a meditative, non-competitive ethos.

I thought for sure we would be in child’s pose before shavasana to go with the reversal theme. I liked how we couldn’t really predict the next pose and the sequencing on each side. Really interesting and memorable class!
