About This Class
Lesson eight of this Tai Chi series opens with song (swinging) warm-ups designed to release tension and reintroduce the body to relaxed, effortless movement. A "Dragon Teacup" cardinal-direction warm-up follows, guiding students through full shoulder rotations in all compass points while coordinating leg bends and lunges. The heart of the class focuses on learning the Ward Off, Roll Back, Press, and Push sequence on the opposite side from the previous lesson, with detailed instruction on 45-degree diagonal weight shifts, waist twisting, foot positioning, and the principle that movement originates from the feet through the knees, through the waist, and expresses through the fingertips. A five-minute standing arm endurance circuit — including small circles, palm pulses, push-and-pull motions, and overhead presses — challenges shoulder stamina while maintaining the Tai Chi principle of relaxed effort under exertion. The class closes with a meditative sealing breath practice and encourages students to explore each movement playfully without self-judgment. Throughout, the instructor frames the practice as medicinal, energetic, and meridian-activating, accessible to all levels.
