About This Class
This class is a methodically structured flow that uses every sequence as a stepping stone toward the advanced arm balance Eka Pada Koundinyasana 2. Steve opens on the back with supine core work — single-knee hugs, bicycle-style leg extensions, and oblique-targeting reaches — before moving into a thorough warm-up of the shoulders and posterior chain via plank-to-down-dog transitions, locust pose, and cobra repetitions. A significant portion of the class is devoted to deconstructing Chaturanga: students drill elbow alignment, shoulder-blade engagement, and hand-contact awareness first in a standing crescent simulation and then in modified knees-down reps before attempting the full version. Hip opening is built progressively through runner's lunge, low lunge (Anjaneyasana), Warrior Two, side angle with optional bind, triangle, half moon (Ardha Chandrasana), standing split, and hand-to-big-toe balance. The arm balance sequence itself involves one-legged plank, knee-to-outer-arm contact, hip elevation, and a slow Chaturanga transition — prioritizing structural integrity over full expression. The class closes with bridge pose (with an optional wheel), supine twists on both sides, a full-body stretch, and Savasana. Throughout, the instructor repeatedly cues breath awareness as the foundation of self-care, keeping the mood focused yet grounding.
