About This Class
This class earns its name "The Hipster" through an unusually thorough pre-warm-up dedicated entirely to hip opening: supine knee-to-chest compressions, leg-to-ceiling hamstring stretches, thread-the-needle, and cradle/pigeon-prep variations — all before a single Sun Salutation. Rudy Mettia layers sharp alignment instruction throughout, cueing foot placement, scapular grounding, and spinal neutrality with characteristic wit. The main flow builds through four rounds of Surya Namaskar with rolling cobra, then moves into a paired left/right sequence of crescent lunge, Warrior Two, Trikonasana, half moon, twisting lunge, and Parsvakonasana — with multiple one-minute holds on each side. A low-lunge side-body stretch and standing forward fold with staggered legs follow. The class closes with demanding supine core work (single-leg lowering, scissors, and partial shoulder-stand pulses), bridge pose with optional full wheel, seated twists in half-lotus, a seated forward fold, and an extended Savasana. Throughout, Rudy explicitly calls attention to wrist modifications in prayer-twist variants and cautions against neck strain in reclined and backbend shapes.
