Our food should go from Mother Earth straight into our mouths instead of making a stop at the chemist who is intent on altering food for only one purpose, “Profit” (health isn’t even an afterthought)!
Increasing the aesthetic beauty of food by adding dyes not only decreases our natural connection to those foods, it creates a disconnect between ourselves and any foods that appear naturally without the chemicals, dyes, preservatives etc…. The same goes to the enhancement of flavor, which leads to our desire for enhanced food over natural food. This is why the Mars family are billionaires and not apple farmers.
We do this with everything: the water we drink, with its fluoride and chlorine; our landscaping, with its toxic chemicals to artificially enhance the foliage and kill “unwanteds”; and even our clothing to enhance color, style and fit. We even do it to our bodies!!! We are obsessed with enhancements because we are obsessed with money and most every enhancement offered is offered to increase profits. Ultimately this is about money and one upping the status quo or some competitor in order to direct sales towards the seller. We are so obsessed with money that we are willing turn a blind eye towards the massive harms and ill effects these enhancements are causing.
Honestly “enhancement” is the wrong word as “enhancement” connotes making something better and that’s not what’s happening! We are actually making things worse, much worse!
These “additions” to our consumer goods come at a cost a very high cost. Even when we think we are doing something for the benefit of health and well-being, like adding chlorine and fluoride to our water, we mess up because our small little brain cannot understand the complexity, immensity and interconnectedness of even the simplest things and how it affects us. Humans and our ancestors have existed for millions of years; not only have we existed, but we have thrived without any modern chemistry, science and technology. Now, with our hubris or arrogance or just simply ignorance, we have created a toxic planet where every life form, from the smallest to the largest, has been adversely affected. We haven’t just affected the sentient beings; we have adversely affected all things-elements and systems-from land and sea to the atmosphere and weather.
I remember back in eighth grade math class, sitting in the very back of the room, not really understanding anything that teacher was saying, and there was this very sweet and quiet girl sitting next to me who used to lean over and help me understand things and answer any questions that I had. Now I wanna pay that girl back and everybody else out there who is so intellectually gifted yet possibly intuitively disconnected. I just wanna lean over and share with you that the important answers are not coming from your intellect. It’s not gonna come from math, science or technology unless the question is “how can we continue the suffering”. The answer to the question, “how can we alleviate suffering and create Utopia”, has been given to us by the great beings who walked on this planet before us like Jesus, Buddha, Mandela, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi and many, many more. The answer has been within their teaching and how they lived their life. This answer can be summed up in the development of “benevolent” qualities. This is how we reach utopia, health and peace. It’s through generosity, compassion, gratitude and a reverence and appreciation for Mother Earth, nature and the interconnectedness of all things that obviously our tiny little brains could never understand.
