Restorative yoga is associated with a number of benefits. An overarching theme that weaves its way through all restorative yoga benefits is the “letting go” of deep holding patterns in the body and finding a state of balance to support healing. One main benefit derived from this theme is stress reduction. Stress is a major epidemic in our society that can create a “hypervigilance” in our muscles, leaving them to become tight and less mobile. Stress also impairs the thinking process, increases heart rate and blood pressure, lowers immunity, and affects tissue repair. Natural repair mechanisms only work when the body is in a relaxed state. The longer held poses characteristic of a restorative yoga sequence function to dial down the sympathetic nervous system’s fight-or-flight response, the place we react from when feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope with the many demands of our lives. In turn, a restorative yoga sequence cultivates an environment in which the parasympathetic nervous system, associated with the relaxation response, can thrive and work efficiently. The parasympathetic nervous system is the counterbalance to the chronic stress response, serving to balance the ratios of stress and relaxation responses in the nervous system.
The second major benefit is that it improves quality of sleep and can restore and increase energy.
The average person in our society is sleep deprived, and because resting is underrated by our society, we try to make up for it by consuming caffeinated beverages or other stimulants. Further, sleep deprivation is linked to weight gain and decreased levels of leptin, the hormone responsible for controlling hunger and minimizing over consumption of unhealthy foods. A restorative yoga practice is one of the best ways to relax the nervous system and create a state of rest in the body. The fifth element or limb in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra’s is Pratyahara, sanskrit for the conscious withdrawal of energy from the senses. When we’re wired and on the treadmill of life, we don’t give our bodies the opportunity to heal and allow for the relaxation response to become activated. We need to consciously slow down to engage in the healing process and allow the body to restore in a natural and organic way.
A third benefit derived from the slowing down process of restorative yoga is weight management. Findings from a scientific study showed that women who practiced restorative yoga, relative to women who were asked to perform basic stretches, lost more fat around the abdominal area.
This finding could be due to the fact that restorative yoga is associated with stress reduction, which translates to lower cortisol levels in the body. High cortisol levels are linked to increased abdominal fat, and chronically stressed individuals tend to engage in “emotional eating” and may overindulge in unhealthy, calorie-dense foods. A restorative yoga sequence with its long held poses and attention to breath can cultivate mindfulness skills. Such skills can be put to use when sitting down to a meal, taking in the taste and smells, and becoming more aware of and in tune with what is being consumed.
Comfort should be your main goal when setting up a space for your restorative yoga practice. Because restorative yoga is a prop-heavy practice, it is ideal to set yourself up with the essential props prior to starting your practice.
Most restorative yoga sequences require the use of blocks, bolsters, blankets, and straps. If these props are not readily available, blankets, towels, books, and belts can work just as well. The beauty of restorative yoga is that you can practice it despite acute or chronic pain, and even while recovering from an injury. The passive poses not only help to heal and nurture the injured areas, but also support posture and alignment.
